Darren Donate is currently an MFA candidate at the University of New Mexico, while also working as an English teacher and welder. His current work examines the social construction of virginity in Mexican culture as well as its use as currency. The title of the piece for Darren Donate's reading is 'All Boys with Cut Tongues,' which has been recently nominated for a Pushcart Award by the Minnesota Review.

ABOUT THE VIRTUAL EVENT

As writing teachers, we must continuously respond to the social realities in our communities and be prepared to challenge linguistic inequities and injustices both in academic contexts and in the local community….

Through a translingual literacy lens, we will explore the following questions: 1. how can we move away from language separation ideologies, which often prevent us from transferring our linguistic abilities to other contexts, in order to truly embrace our language resources as a whole? 2. what power dynamics do we encounter when we challenge linguistic standards, especially in classes or contexts where linguistic inclusivity may not be valued? And 3. how can we challenge “language correctness” or standard language expectations, especially when “standard language” expectations do not align with the goals and objectives of the context or purpose of a task? Ultimately, we will think about these questions as we consider translingual literacy strategies as tools for 1. reflecting on our own language ideologies and biases in English studies and 2. designing linguistically inclusive spaces for teaching and learning responsive to the linguistic realities and writing goals of our students. By embracing our students’ and our own full linguistic repertoires, we can collectively engage in meaningful impact within and beyond academic contexts. 

Alyssa G. Cavazos is an Associate Professor of Rhetoric, Composition, and Literacy Studies in the Department of Writing and Language Studies and Director for the Center for Teaching Excellence at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. She teaches undergraduate and graduate coursework in writing studies. Her pedagogical and scholarly interests include: language difference in the teaching of writing, translingual writing across communities, professional development in higher education, and border rhetorics. She was awarded the University of Texas System 2017 Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Award and the 2017 UTRGV Excellence Award in Teaching. She is committed to designing linguistically inclusive pedagogies, which can lead to students’ academic success across academic disciplines in higher education.
